I use trail boss with great effects with the martini henry 577/450 case but I would not follow trail boss advice about 70% etc as this case can hold 120 gn of black powder I usually use 15 gns with a 480 gn bullet and can hit a 3 - 4 inch target at 110 yards Re: Subsonic load for 308 with Trail Boss All the loads that I have for 308 Subs are with pistol powders such as Blue dot, Green Dot, Unique, etc. The bad thing about those powders is the loads are position sensitive.

I've been using Trail Boss in.308 for starter / practice loads for my kids (150 gr FMJ / 10-14 gr.). Max velocity is around 1400 fps which is too low for hunting for the bullets I have available. They're now graduating to reduced.308 loads for hunting with H4895 and 110-125 gr. bullets. Firearms Ownership is the Gateway Drug to Liberty

I shot trail boss tuesday using 20,22,24,26 and 27 grs.I wanted to see how well it lite up so used the xtp(429dia)with green sabots. Every shot fired and every increase in powder went up. I cannot find the paper I wrote the speeds on but remember the 27 gr load was 1800+fps.

I might have found the .308 load I was looking for. Winchester Brass, (its what I already had sized and primed) CCI BR-2 primers 10 gr Trail Boss Sierra 30/30 170 gr bullet COL = 2.530 Velocity 5 shot average 1049 fps. Extreme spread was 14 FPS. No Keyholing at 25 yards. Almost zero recoil Noise without suppressor at most 22 lr
Use a 125 grain bullet and a starting load of 4895. 43 grains is about 2770 FPS per hodgdon. With 4895 you can easily go 10% under that starting load if you want. I use 34 grains in a 308 load with a 170 gr round nose load for plinking that is very comfortable to shoot and I would have no problem shooting a deer with that load. TOOLMAKER 251

  • Apr 16, 2011 · Almost every caliber of rifle I have has digested Trail Boss loads and others. 6.5 Swede, 7.5 Swiss, .308, 8mm. Also have used the Sinterfire frangibles and plastic South African riot bullets (18g). The reduced loads don't cycle an autoloader, but the m96, K31 and FR-7 don't notice...
  • A friend who just started reloading asked about reduced loads for his son's 7mm-08. I called Sierra and the gentleman directed me to the IMR site and a .pdf file relating to reduced pistol and rifle loads using Trail Boss. Seems that you can load your rifle/pistol case full of Trail Boss (minus bullet seating depth) and weigh the load.

  • Is there any load data anyonw knows of using Trail boss and subsonic .308 winchester rounds? Would it be possible with a 180 or 200 gr? If the answer is no then great. I just want to know. That would be good for the suppressor.

I am doing some subsonic loads for my 308. Its 1 in 8 twist, and it should be stable with 220 grain lead bullet, that I made with 300 Blackout Lee mold. I have read almost everywhere that Trail Boss is the powder I should use, but currently only IMR 4320 is available for me.
